Second grade prepared a wonderful Mass today for Catholic Schools Week. Student Council members presented the baby blankets that they made for the We Care Pregnancy Center to Father Russell to be blessed. Middle school students received their certificates for Honor Roll and High Honor Roll after Mass. It was a wonderful celebration!
Two of our St. Mary School 6th grade students participated in a Chess tournament last weekend at St. Joseph Middle School in Lemont. It is a Catholic Scholastic Tournament, normally held each month. There were 19 students that participated from their age group (6-8th grade). St. Mary School took 2nd place overall! Congratulations to both!
Students in Prekindergarten to 8th Grade will be showcasing their artwork on Nov. 16th from 4:00-6:00 pm. Please come join us in celebrating their talents! Thanks to the NIU students and instructors.
Dwain Ackerman, from The Meemic Foundation, presented a check to Marcia Feltes at the faculty meeting this week. The grant money will help to purchase 4 sets of Dash & Dot robots. Mrs. Feltes plans to use these robots in an after school computer programming club. Thanks so much to The Meemic Foundation.
SMS 8th graders competed in the regional Illinois History Fair competition at NIU along with 38 other schools in northern Illinois. Students had to create a website, documentary and/or research paper on any topic relating to Illinois history. Many students chose local topics such as the Egyptian Theater, the Lincoln Highway, Drones made at Wulitizer, Barb Wire, Annie Glidden, the Ellwood House and the rivalry between DeKalb and Sycamore. We are excited to announce that 19 of 27 projects entered (70%) were ranked Superior and will be competing in Springfield at the state competition in May. The remainder 8 projects all received an Excellent rating. We are so incredibly proud of these students for their hard work and dedication! Congratulations!
Student council members had the honor of meeting Bishop David Malloy on Wednesday night at the Newman Center, Christ the Teacher Parish. With the help of their parents, the Student Council members prepared and served a delicious meal for the Bishop and about 50 NIU students. They were also in charge of clean-up! Bishop Malloy greeted and shook hands with each of our students, talking to them about their plans for high school. It was a wonderful event! A big thanks to all of our parents who helped!

The first graders have been busy the past few weeks building and constructing their own true-to-size bald eagle nest. This year they are learning about the bald eagle and watching a pair of bald eagles at Berry College in Georgia via a live webcam. As the Georgia bald eagles have their nest ready for egg laying in a couple of weeks, the first graders have their nest ready too! They compared the size of a bald eagle nest to a hummingbird nest. The girl with the pink gloves is holding the nest from a hummingbird to compare it to the size of the bald eagle nest. What an amazing project! Great job Mrs. Krzus and first graders.
The “Salute to WWII Veterans,” a Guardian Angel program fundraiser for school tuition, was a huge success. The evening featured interactive presentations by eighth-grade students, a Wall of Honor of WWII veterans, Live Performance by Jazz in Progress and appetizers/dinner.
